Global Cybersecurity Trends for 2026: From AI Risk to Geopolitical Threats

Cybersecurity is no longer a purely technical challenge. As highlighted in the World Economic Forum’s Global Cybersecurity Outlook 2026, it has become a defining frontier where technology, geopolitics, economics and societal trust intersect. While the threat landscape is accelerating, one message stands out clearly: collaboration remains not only possible, but powerful.

As organisations navigate growing geopolitical fragmentation, widening technological divides and the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity in 2026 is marked by constant transformation. Disruptions now move across borders at unprecedented speed, while innovation promises resilience, if governance, skills and cooperation can keep pace.

Trend 1: AI Is Supercharging the Cyber Arms Race

Artificial intelligence is now the most significant driver of change in cybersecurity. According to the report, 94% of surveyed leaders identify AI as the top force reshaping cyber risk in the year ahead.

This recognition is translating into action. Nearly two-thirds of organisations (64%) now have processes in place to assess the security of AI tools, almost double the figure from 2025. AI is being deployed to enhance threat detection, automate responses and improve resilience at scale.

However, the same technologies are empowering attackers. 87% of respondents identified AI-related vulnerabilities as the fastest-growing cyber risk in 2025, underscoring how quickly the balance between defence and offense is shifting. Malicious actors are using AI to scale phishing campaigns, automate reconnaissance and exploit vulnerabilities faster than traditional security teams can respond.

For executives, the challenge is no longer whether to adopt AI, but how to do so securely, aligning innovation with governance, accountability and human oversight in an environment where risks evolve faster than regulations.

Trend 2: Geopolitics Is Now a Core Cybersecurity Variable

Geopolitical volatility has moved from the background to the center of cybersecurity strategy. In 2026, 64% of organizations account for geopolitically motivated cyberattacks in their risk mitigation plans, including espionage, disruption of critical infrastructure and influence operations.

Among the world’s largest organizations, 91% have changed their cybersecurity strategies in response to geopolitical instability. Fragmentation, sovereignty concerns and declining trust between nations are reshaping how information is shared and how cyber cooperation functions.

At the same time, confidence in national cyber preparedness is eroding. 31% of respondents report low confidence in their country’s ability to respond to a major cyber incident, with stark regional differences. While respondents in the Middle East and North Africa report high confidence in protecting critical infrastructure, confidence remains particularly low in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The public sector faces acute pressure. Despite its central role in safeguarding national infrastructure, 23% of public-sector organizations report insufficient cyber resilience capabilities. Recent incidents affecting airports, energy facilities and other critical services highlight how cyber risk has become inseparable from national security and economic stability.

Trend 3: Cyber-Enabled Fraud Is Becoming a Universal Threat

Cyber risk is no longer abstract, it is personal. 73% of respondents reported that they or someone in their network was affected by cyber-enabled fraud in 2025, making it one of the most pervasive cyber threats today.

This shift is reshaping leadership priorities. Chief executive officers now rank cyber-enabled fraud as their top concern, overtaking ransomware. AI-powered scams, deepfakes and identity fraud are threatening households, brands and executive credibility alike.

Meanwhile, chief information security officers continue to prioritise ransomware and supply chain resilience. This divergence reveals a growing gap between board-level risk perception and frontline cyber realities, one that organisations must actively bridge through shared metrics, scenario planning and executive-level cyber literacy.

Supply chains remain a critical weak point. 65% of large organizations cite third-party and supply chain vulnerabilities as their greatest barrier to cyber resilience, up significantly from the previous year. Increased concentration, limited visibility and dependency on a small number of vendors amplify systemic risk.

Collective Cyber Resilience as a Strategic Imperative

The Global Cybersecurity Outlook 2026 makes one conclusion unavoidable: cyber resilience is no longer optional, and it is no longer achievable alone. Unequal access to expertise and resources is widening cyber inequity, while threats increasingly transcend organizational and national boundaries.

In this environment, cybersecurity becomes both an economic and societal imperative. Stronger collaboration between the private sector, public institutions and international partners is essential, not just to reduce risk, but to sustain trust in digital systems that underpin global growth.

Even amid fragmentation and uncertainty, the cybersecurity frontier offers a powerful reminder: collective action still works. Organisations that invest in cooperation, shared intelligence and inclusive resilience will be better positioned not only to survive 2026, but to shape a more secure digital future.
